Garden Organics Questions

But I already compost at home?

Great Lakes Council, Greater Taree City Council and Gloucester Shire Council recognise that many residents already have household composting systems. The new garden organics collection can complement your current household composting systems allowing more of your garden waste to be composted.

What can I compost in my household composting system?

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Lawn clippings
  • Dry leaves and prunings
  • Fresh leaves and prunings

What can I compost in my council garden organics bin?

  • Lawn clippings
  • Sticks and twigs (up to 15cm in diameter)
  • Dry leaves and prunings
  • Fresh leaves and prunings
Of course, once your household compost is full you need to allow time for it to mature before transferring to your garden. In the past, this might have meant that for a small amount of time you had excess garden waste. Your new garden organics bin now means that you never have to send any garden waste to landfill again. This is fantastic news for the environment and our community.

Why should we recycle our garden waste?

Composting reduces the amount of organic waste we send to landfill in turn reducing the amount of harmful gases that contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. Composting replicates a natural recycling process that maintains soil nutrients and plant communities - known as the 'nutrient cycle'. In nature, composting processes allow nutrients in an ecosystem to be used over and over again so as to sustain the ecosystem.

Composting simply converts organic waste into a natural rich soil product called humus which improves the quality and moisture holding ability of your soil.

What happens to my garden organic waste?

Once your garden organics bin is collected it is taken to a green waste processing facility where it is composted or mulched. The finished product will be sold back to the community for use as a soil conditioner. By disposing of your green waste through your garden organics bin you are helping to recover a valuable resource and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.
